Inclosures from the Commons 1722

The following extract, relating only to Hollinsclough, is from a larger Alstonefield document which names people who have cottages or inclosures and the rental that they should pay.  We have added the place of abode and other information in the ‘Additional information’ column.

Attornement  (from Fr. tourner, "to turn"), in English property law it is the acknowledgment of a new lord by the tenant on the alienation/change of land.

We think that in this case it wasn’t a ‘new’ landlord but that Sir John Harpur  had decided it was about time the people who had inclosed land should pay rent.

Did Sir John need extra funds for a specific cause?  Or had he lost money, for example the South Sea Bubble had only occurred 2 years previously.

 Survey

Against three tenants names there is a comment ... in the survey..  Presumably a survey had been carried out not long before 1722;  we do not have any record of this survey.
